..And A Little About The Gillian Thompson Foundation

Our Mission:
To improve literacy by accomplishing reading and writing success of students, children and families across community, regional, national and global diaspora.

Our Vision:
A non-profit organization that impacts the literacy of students, children and families in the process of reducing the illiteracy rate in Guyana.

The Thompson family suffered the tragic loss of a dear daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend in a tragic road accident on Christmas Eve Day 2013, in the prime of her life.  A life, which she devoted to help in the provision of “life-long learning to the people of Guyana”.

At the time of her passing, she was the Chief Librarian of the National Public Library in Georgetown and was one of the few distinguished personalities to head this national institution.

In her honor the family has accepted the challenge to continue in the pursuit of her goal of enhancing literacy. Statistics show that Guyana is ranked 110th, with a literacy rate of 91.8%. (Literacy was defined as the ability to read and write by a specific age).

Accordingly, the family proposes the establishment of the Gillian Thompson Literacy Fund (GTLF) as a medium with the purpose to positively impact the literacy of students, children and families, with particular focus to age 15 and below. The Gillian Thompson Literacy Fund will be operated under the umbrella of the proposed Gillian Thompson Foundation.
